This has to be called as the biggest cyber threat ever to have caused panic, alarm, and global preparation of something on an unprecedented level. Also known as Year 2000 bug, Y2K Bug, and simply as the Millennium bug, it was stated that when the 20th century will be transforming into the 21st at 12:00 AM on December 31, 1999, a world-wide chaos will befall on all the computers and computer networks on Earth. It took almost all the year and participation of more than 1000 companies from around the globe to re-code computer software and network protocols on a massive scale in order to avoid Y2K infection.

The problem which scared the wits out of everyone was a simple coding structure: programming languages before the 90s were developed in such a way where they condense four-digit year into two digits. This means that computers worldwide can recognize “99” as the year 1999, but not “00” as the year 2000. Programmers had to re-code all the current software around the world in order to change this traditional value.

 

Almost everything that was supposed to be connected to the internet, or even without the connectivity, using computer chips, will malfunction as the date changes to 2000. Anyhow, due to extreme efforts by various IT companies for almost a year, the Y2K problem was solved with only very minor systems getting malfunctioned. Here is another cyber-attack which is termed as perhaps the priciest cyber-attack ever. This time it was a singular company which was targeted by the unethical hackers for a data breach, but this company was also the world’s biggest provider of marketing and management services. The data breach that happened includes the tally of such prestigious and important customers like BestBuy, JP Morgan Chase, and various big financial institution’s, online retailers, and other important companies across the Americas. The attack happened in 2011 and cost almost $4 billion in damage. Millions of email addresses of the respective customers of these companies were compromised, and the hackers used them to further the criminal activity and access confidential info.

America and Russia were at Cold War when in 1982, the American intelligence organization CIA found a way to disrupt the operations of the Siberian gas pipeline of Russia via manipulating its central code.

Anyways, the Sony Corporation had the blow of their life when almost 77 million accounts belonging to Sony PlayStation and Sony Entertainment Network were hacked by unethical hackers. What was worst is that the hackers directly targeted and stole debit/credit card information of all those 77 million accounts at Sony. Sony suffered financial damages amounting $1 – $2 billion. This huge cyber-attack at Sony lefts the company’s reputation for IT and technological sanctity hanging in between.

An American Navy veteran known as Shawn Carpenter exposed a series of cyber-attacks in 2004, which is now remembered famously as “Titan Rain”. When FBI probed the case further, it was found out that the hackers belong to government-supported cells in China, and they have been infiltrating several highly confidential networks in the US. These networks belonging to NASA, Sandia National Laboratories, Lockheed Martin, and Redstone Arsenal. The severity of these attacks was such that they threatened to take off confidential military and government data of USA. However, due to the discovery of Mr. Carpenter, highly confidential data was saved in time from being exposed which could have caused worldwide political turmoil.

 

So, these were the 5 worst cyber-attacks the world has experienced so far, but they are certainly not the only ones that have happened. The list is diverse and contains much more attacks.
